Upcoming KiwiSaver changes
8 July 2025
The 2025 Budget announced a range of KiwiSaver changes. If you’re an employer or KiwiSaver member it’s important to understand how KiwiSaver works.
Expansion to 16 and 17-year-olds
From 1 July 2025, 16 and 17-year-olds will be eligible for the Government contribution. Members will need to contribute $1,042.86 in any year from 1 July to 30 June to receive the full Government contribution.
KiwiSaver members aged 16 and 17 will also be eligible to receive compulsory employer contributions from 1 April 2026. The member will need to be a KiwiSaver member and make employee contributions. This group will also need to enrol in KiwiSaver as the age for auto-enrolment will remain at 18 years of age.
Reduction in the Government contribution
From 1 July 2025, there are 2 changes to the Government contribution that are explained below.
- The Government contribution is being halved from the current level. To receive the full annual contribution of $260.72, members will need to contribute $1,042.86 in that year.
- Members with earnings over $180,000 per year will not be eligible for the Government contribution.
It’s important to note that the changes to the Government contribution on 1 July 2025 will not impact on the Government contributions calculated for the year 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025.
Increase in contribution rates
The default employee and employer contribution rate of 3% will rise to 3.5% from 1 April 2026. This will increase again in April 2028 to 4%.
Members who want to stay at 3% will be able to apply for a temporary exemption. Members would be able to apply to Inland Revenue (via phone or myIR) for a temporary rate reduction.

Privacy updates and training
Due to recent changes, this month we wish to remind you of the update to the Privacy Act 2020 with a new principle called the Information Privacy Principle 3A (IPP3A). For practices’, the new principle means there are additional notification obligations when receiving personal information about a patient from a third party. Under IPP3A, if your practice receives patient information from another provider (such as a lab, hospital, specialist, pharmacy or ACC), you must take reasonable steps to let the patient know their information has been collected. This change applies to any information collected on or after 1st May 2026.

Welcome Winter!
Winter is on the way, and with it usually comes the usual run of coughs, colds, and other bugs. Most practices will already have their usual measures in place but now is a good time to reinforce the basics and lead by example, particularly when it comes to staying home if you’re unwell. It is also a good time to check that expectations around leave, sick leave and wellbeing are clear heading into winter.

Easing fuel and living-cost pressures, in practice
While we cannot control the wider economic environment, making clear, practical decisions in response to the current economic pressures can ease the load on our practice and our staff. Rising fuel prices and the broader cost-of-living pressure are not only having financial implications, they are also impacting how we feel about normal day-to-day ‘necessities’, which may be affecting stress levels and causing rising anxiety for some. It is important to focus on what we can change – how we can make small adjustments to support staff, reduce avoidable stress and keep the practice functioning well. own.
