How can MAS help?

How can MAS help?
This month we wanted to step back from the more detailed advice we usually provide through HealthyPractice and take a look at how MAS can help you and your practice more generally.
Insuring what matters most
You probably already know that MAS provides Business Risks insurance to protect your practice. We also provide insurance to cover your house and contents, life, income and disability, cars and boats, and we have won the Consumer People’s Choice award three years in a row for house, contents, car and life insurance.
You can find out more about our insurance products at https://www.mas.co.nz/insurance/
Responsible investment
Our MAS KiwiSaver plan is available to practice staff and you can find our more about making MAS your preferred provider at https://www.mas.co.nz/resources/investment-resources/kiwisaver-business-owners/
MAS has a responsible investment policy for both its KiwiSaver and Retirement savings products. This means we don’t invest in companies whose principal business activity is
- The manufacture and sale of armaments
- The manufacture and sale of tobacco
- The exploration, extraction, refining or processing of fossil fuels or who are utilities that burn them.

Helping our new to NZ Members
If you have contractors or employees who are new to NZ, or are thinking about moving to New Zealand, we’ve put together some useful information, tips and links to important websites at our Moving to NZ page https://www.mas.co.nz/moving-to-new-zealand/.
Here for Good
MAS was founded by doctors, for doctors almost 100 years ago. From the start, the aim was to advise and support Members financially – helping them do their own good work in the communities in which they were based – and that work continues to this day.
We’re currently working on playing a greater role in funding high-impact health research, promotion and education in NZ through the establishment of the MAS Foundation. The Foundation is still in the process of being established but we’ll have more to share about its strategy in the near future.
If you have any questions about the additional support MAS might be able to offer you or your colleagues, you can call us on 0800 800 627 or email info@mas.co.nz

Major Changes to NZ Employment Law: What Employers Need to Know in 2026
Something we have been hearing lots from our members is how do we stay on top of these changes that seem to be popping up in the news? Are there things we need to do right now? What are the actual impacts in terms we understand? Significant reforms to New Zealand’s employment landscape have now taken effect, with more changes on the horizon. From high‑income dismissal rules to a full rewrite of the Holidays Act, these updates reshape the rights, responsibilities, and relationships between employers and workers.

2026 Off to a Flying Start
As we lament the end of the holidays and ask ourselves where has summer gone?!, we’re also looking ahead to another busy year — particularly given the volume of legislative change expected in 2026 (more on this below). We’re pleased to welcome Emma Wasson to the Healthy Practice team, who joined us in January in the newly created role of HR Coordinator-Healthy Practice. Emma will be focused on supporting our HealthyPractice Advisers and strengthening the resources available to you. She’ll also be involved in developing our annual reports, including the staff-ratio and GP remuneration reports, due out early this year.

Happy Holidays
As we approach the end of the calendar year, we’d like to thank our Subscribers and MAS Members for your continued support of the Healthy Practice service and team. It has certainly been another busy year. Throughout 2025, we’ve seen the matters coming through become increasingly complex and varied, alongside a noticeable increase in change activity across the health and practice sectors. This year has also brought change for us, with the retirement of the much-respected and one-of-a-kind Shaun Phelan and Fiona Mines, as well as broader change across MAS.
